Geographical
Area Covered:

Scotland

Background
Information:

The Scottish Genital Anomaly Network (SGAN) is a national managed clinical network, funded by National Services Division and hosted by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (Women and Children’s Directorate).  SGAN is made up of a multidisciplinary group of health care professionals that provides care to children and adults who may have a disorder of sex development or are born with an anomaly of the genitalia.  SGAN was accredited by NSD in 2006.
The overall role of SGAN is to improve long-term clinical outcome.  Its function includes:
Provision of appropriate support to the affected person and their family
guiding investigation and short-term management of the affected person
developing a long-term management plan
linking clinical personnel who are involved in-patient management
collection of data on affected cases through a national register
provision of opportunity for clinical development of staff
facilitate research and audit.

SGAN is lead by a multi-disciplinary Executive Group of clinicians from the 4 centres of paediatrics in Scotland with service user representation.  The Executive Group meets quarterly to guide the development of the network and identify its work plan.
The Network office is run from the Managed Clinical Networks Department within RHSC Yorkhill.  The Lead Clinician for the Network is Dr Faisal Ahmed, Consultant Paediatric Endocrinologist.  Dr Ahmed is supported by Tracey Hannah, Network Administrator and Derrick Pearce, Network Manager.
