Core Principles of MCNs

All MCNs must demonstrate that they are satisfying 12 core principles.

They must:

  • Have clear management arrangements in place
  • Have a defined structure
  • Have clear statements of expected clinical and service improvements
  • Use a documented evidence base
  • Be truly multi-professional including patients
  • Have a clear policy on disseminating information
  • Produce audit data and participate in open review of results
  • Have agreement about evidence based and network practice
  • Have an approved quality assurance programme
  • Maximise education and continued professional development
  • Focus on patient access
  • Make a difference and demonstrate value for money

Advantages of MCNs

MCNs have many advantages and can assist in implementing key Scottish Government priorities.  Examples include:

Patient Involvement:  Patients should be an integral part to MCN development and activity.  By involving patients in every aspect of MCN work, there is a greater chance of achieving the aim that patients experience is co-ordinated and care improved.

Waiting times initiatives: Looking at services from the patient’s perspective will help identify areas where improvements can be made.

Improving quality:  Developing formal Quality Assurance programmes, carrying out audits of services and responding to their findings will help improve the quality of care for patients.

Workforce planning: MCNs aim to make the most effective use of existing resources, especially the workforce.
